Hopefully Good News for Gitex Saudi Arabia 2011

When was the last time I talked about Gitex Saudi Arabia? Probably back when I posted that Gitex Riyadh isn’t recognized by GITEX.

So what’s special about this year’s Gitex Saudi Arabia? For starters it won’t be in April but on 16 – 19 May 2011, right after my birthday… It’s still an “all in one” event combining:

These 3 events will be held at the “new” Riyadh Expo Center (gowalla link). Let’s just hope it rains because the new building is well made and can handle a few rain drops.

Oh. Guess not. From the last day of Riyadh Book Fair.

Anyway back to the “good news”.

I got my hands on the floor plan for Gitex Saudi Arabia 2011 and I was shocked at what I found… or did not find. Here’s Gitex Riyadh 2010 floor plan:

Dominated by STC and Mobily, the biggest telecom companies in Saudi Arabia.

Now compare it to Gitex Saudi Arabia 2011 floor plan:

Just what is going on? Has STC and Mobily finally started to think that it’s better to spend money on improving infrastructure and services than marketing and wasting valuable floor space?!

I am actually looking forward to visit Gitex Riyadh this year!

Is Gitex Riyadh 2010 even recognized by GITEX? (Updated, answer is: NO)

Update: Thanks to Haitham Ghazal for inquiring about it. He contacted GITEX in Dubai and their answer was: “Gitex Saudi is not associated with the same GITEX Technology WEEK in Dubai. The event is franchised in name only and is not organised or sold in any way by the Dubai World Trade Centre”. That proves it, Gitex Saudi is a useless show.

I have to ask this, the official Gitex homepage DOES NOT MENTION GITEX Saudi Arabia 2010 in Riyadh. So is Gitex Riyadh 2010 or should I say “Computer Bazaar/Haraj Riyadh 2010” is considered an actual trade exhibition or just a marketplace?

At least this year they have a list of participating companies, a horribly made list. No major companies like Microsoft attending.

Here’s the full show booklet. Notice how big Mobily and STC booths are …

Gitex Saudi Arabia 2010 in Riyadh

The next Gitex Saudi Arabia in Riyadh will be from 25 to 29 Apr 2010.

Gitex Riyadh 2010 will be held for the second year at the new Riyadh Exhibitions Company. Gowalla location here.

Don’t expect it to be good. I am sure it will be a STC vs Mobily expo as usual.

More info about Gitex Saudi Arabia 2009

We talked earlier about Gitex participation. Here is the full showroom floor map. As expected it is dominated by STC and Mobily. You can watch the whole PDF map here.

Arab Tech TV will provide live streaming from Gitex at 7 p.m. You can watch the stream here.

Shufflegazine from the UAE is covering Gitex as well. You can follow their images on their Tumblr page. They showed this picture which was taken recently and Gitex preparations were not complete. That must be good ….

All you need to know about Gitex Saudi Arabia 2009

Riyadh Exhibitions Company has finally updated their website just in time for Gitex Saudi Arabia 2009 in Riyadh. Probably not the best design but it is an improvement over the old one.

As usual it’s mainly a shopping exhibition: Gitex Saudi Arabia 2009 and Gitex Saudi Arabia Computer Shopper 2009. I am not looking forward to “WAP Technology” and “ASP Business Host”.

When is the event? Gitex Saudi Arabia will be from the 19th to 23rd of April 2009.

How to get to the new exhibition building? Just follow the direction on this link (even though it claims it is in Lebanon for some reason).

Who are the participants? As usual STC and Mobily (Saudi Arabia’s biggest telecommunication companies) are participating. Which I think is a bad idea and a waste of space. I was given a list of participating companies which you can find in this PDF file.

I have been extremely busy with some family matters so I don’t think I might be even able to attend. You will be able to find coverage at Tech WD (Arabic tech website).

Riyadh Exhibition’s site down before Gitex Saudi Arabia 2009?

This does not look good, Riyadh Exhibition Co’s website is giving the following error:

ADODB.Recordset error ‘800a0bcd’ Either BOF or EOF is True, or the current record has been deleted. Requested operation requires a current record. /recweb/main.asp, line 39

And just one month before Gitex Saudi Arabia 2009 which will be held in Riyadh between April 19th to April 23rd 2009. This will be the first Gitex Saudi Arabia in the new Riyadh Exhibition building which is roughly double the size of the older building. Here is a map of the new Riyadh Exhibition building.

We will talk more about Gitex Riyadh 2009 in a few more days. Hopefully it won’t be as disappointing as last year’s.

Gitex Riyadh 2008 Review

The show has become a telecommunication show, with STC and Mobily (the 2 telecoms in Saudi Arabia) taking almost half the exhibition space, which is unfortunate, there’s usually a mobile and telecommunications show and there is no reason to merge it into Gitex. The other “part” of Gitex was simply computer resellers offering their products.

A few years ago, before Gitex was held in Riyadh, the same building used now was holding a “computer show” which is simply a reseller exhibition where they offer promotions and discounts, no innovation at all.

Asking non-“computer geeks” about the show and what do they think about it, they are under the impression that this is a “telecommunications first and computer sales” show. I guess thats enough for the REC organizers who are paying the license to Gitex. Asking others who attended “real” computer exhibitions like “CeBit” and “Gitex Dubai” the original Gitex and they would say that the complete building of REC expo is only as small as one of the many halls in CeBit or Gitex Dubai.

One of the only innovative thing was AMD showing their new triple core CPUs. Unfortunately, the stand where the AMD distributor (Almasa) was not finished in the first day of Gitex (and honestly I have no reason to return) and Almasa’s site is not mentioning Gitex in their news section. Another is Zai, a local PC OEM, announcing a deal with nVidia to offer gaming PCs this is new for the market because almost no high end video cards appear in the local market, only 2 stores ( PATH and Softland/Binaries ) offer them at extremely high prices ( almost %40 added to the original price ). And that’s the only news I found about Gitex from Google News.

Other companies to note: Samsung, Panasonic (with their new AVCHD cameras), a full section Taiwanese companies looking for local dealers. Also in the exhibition: CITC, MCIT, Sadad Payment System( a Saudi IT project, they even had a new iMac on display, best part of Gitex Riyadh 😉 ), Garmin dealers ( I question the need for that in this show), Riyadh School (again, why?), HTC, i-mate, ITE (Logitech distributor in UAE) I thought we already had a Logitech distributor in Saudi Arabia, Mishaal Sudairy, they got a very old and outdated page though, who redirects his .com.sa domain to some other subdomain? that’s just unprofessional.

Missing from the show: Microsoft (for the second or third year now), Apple, Sony, Intel, Hitachi (they had an amazing stand last year).

The Gitex Shopper had nothing to offer, just “cheap” laptops and a total mess.

The REC Expo building is the same old building with very bad parking arrangements. The entrance to the expo was a total mess, people pushing, no organization at all.

My rating of the show? 2/5. Considering it was a bit bitter, I mean better, than last years’ show which I give it a 1/5. So again: don’t bother, just go to Gitex in Dubai in a few months, it will be worth your time. Anything is better than this.

Gitex Riyadh 2008

From April 20 to April 24 2008, at the same, old, small, crowded, parking space less Riyadh Exhibition Co (you can see for yourself on Google Maps, which is still crappy, as in, no real Saudi map, here).

As usual, the REC site is the template as last year ( this year’s page, last year’s) no online registration and no list of participating companies as usual.

I think I will go this year just for a laugh, hopefully I won’t cry at the state of technology exhibitions in Saudi Arabia.

And we are back! SaudiMac.com is ready!

My webhost decided to abandon me for no reason. It was Netbunch which was aquired by WebHostPlus. And it seems I wasn’t the only one. So if your hosting company got aquired by WebHostPlus then cancel your account and move somewhere else. I would also like to announce that my second site, SaudiMac Blog has launched. With my rant about last week’s Gitex Riyadh 2007 which was very unimpressive.
