I think I will go this year just for a laugh, hopefully I won’t cry at the state of technology exhibitions in Saudi Arabia.
A four-day conference on Information Technology and National Security will be held here from Nov. 3-6 as part of the Saudi Arabia’s drive against terrorism via the Internet and other security issues.
One of the goals of the conference, said Prince Muqrin, was to “encourage researchers in modern technology to use it in such a way as to serve national security in a comprehensive manner.”

This forum is organized as part of the Smart Cities initiative, which aims to transform Saudi Arabia’s major cities to smart cities. Smart cities are generally characterized by the availability of advanced broadband communications services and effective electronic applications that help bridge the “digital divide” and improve the economic competence in these cities. Moreover, wireless technologies, notably WiFi-Mesh and WiMax technologies, have gained great momentum by cities around the world as quick and effective technologies for enabling municipal networks.
The Saudi Arabian government is aware of the importance of e-Transactions and the major role it plays in contributing to the national economic growth. Therefore Saudi Arabia will take full advantage of the use of information and communication technologies combined with organizational change and new skills. Towards this end the e-Transactions National Program, “Yesser” was launched as a joint program between the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the Ministry of Finance and the Communications & Information Technology Commission. These agencies are organizing The Saudi National e-Transactions Conference which will be held under the patronage of The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz, at the King Faisal Conference Halls in the Intercontinental Hotel, Riyadh. This conference will be convened from 14th till 17th of January 2007, and will be attended by high-ranking and prominent Saudi decision makers from the public and private sectors involved in the IT and Telecom industries.
Over 300 delegates from Symantec’s channel partner organisations, enterprise and SMB clients will gather for the conference to be held at the Intercontinental Hotel, Riyadh on 7th November 2006.
The conference will focus on the theme of ‘Infrastructure, Information and Interaction’, with a series of interactive sessions covering a range of topics, including data protection and recovery, internet security, cyber-crime, e-Government, email security and availability, information integrity and data management.
